It’s extra-long since we’re rolling together a few weeks’ worth of picks (Thursday–Saturday), so there’s plenty of great music to dive into.
Lew Apollo – Diamonds and Gold
Lew Apollo shines with soulful vocals and shimmering grooves on Diamonds and Gold. The track blends raw emotion with smooth, modern production, making it a standout that’s both heartfelt and effortlessly cool.
Aaron Stephens – Took You Too Far
Aaron Stephens, a soulful singer-songwriter and guitarist. TEAHCES AT SCHOOL OF ROCK and might be in class with the kids listening when this debuts. 2025 has seen Aaron return to regular touring throughout the state, and he’s starting to get back to drawing well in some of his home venues. His Spotify listenership is now larger than it was when he had an ACL-bump in 2021, and we’re headed back out of state in late August. We’re aiming to release a new full-length album sometime in 2026.
Somebody Someone – The Light
Their latest release, “The Light,” continues this exploration, offering a beautiful melody and raw emotion that blend seamlessly into their music. The alt-indie singer-songwriter doesn’t shy away from vulnerability, and “The Light” is a testament to that.
Jon Funnell – The Light
Jon Funnell is a native Austin musician returning with a new country single ‘My Friends All Moved To Austin’. A pedal steel-soaked, good time country singalong for anyone still figuring out where they belong. Inspired by Waylon Jennings’ saying ‘too dumb for New York City and too ugly for L.A.’, the song expands on that feeling through the lens of Austin’s 2020 transplant wave. The only other thing I can think of right now is if Lorie says my name on-air, here’s the pronunciation!
Jon Muq – Secret Island
Jon Muq invites listeners on a serene, sonic escape with Secret Island. Dreamy melodies, lush production, and a soothing groove create a soundtrack for reflection and wanderlust. Jon was also our Artist in Residence for July, sharing his unique sound and creative energy throughout the month.
Louisiana Surf Department – Bright Bright
Louisiana Surf Department is a swampedelic country-rock band hailing from Austin, Texas. Their sound fuses the gritty twang of Southern roots with psychedelic grooves and atmospheric textures, creating a uniquely immersive listening experience. Known for energetic live shows and storytelling that evokes both the bayou and the open road, they’re carving out a sound that’s equal parts soulful, gritty, and mesmerizing.
Wyatt Weaver Band – Highway 80
The Wyatt Weaver Band delivers a high-energy mix of Texas red dirt, southern rock, alt-country, and hillbilly blues. Catch them live for the Riverbend Centre for the Arts Unplugged series on October 9, followed by Grenada Theater in Alpine, TX on October 10. After wrapping a Midwest tour through Nebraska and Iowa, the band is enjoying some well-deserved downtime before hitting the stage again.
Henri Herber – Cold City
Henri Herbert’s new single Cold City is out now, with the full album Get It While It’s Hot dropping November 7th (HH Records/BMI). Co-written with Kevin Smith, bassist for Willie Nelson’s band, the song tells Henri’s personal story of the challenges and triumphs of immigrating to America.
